BACKGROUNDS

Kay Holland is a non-binary thing-maker and corgi-obsessive from Kansas. At the University of Kansas, they received awards for their thesis animatic Gigi the Gamer Girl, and the virtual-reality music video Feeling Green, both of which offer positive messaging and representation for LGBTQ+ audiences. As Freakydinks Publishing, Kay co-illustrated and digitized the comic Saint of Blades with Ben Patton. They are an alumn of the WarnerMedia Access Early Career Bootcamp, HBOMax Animated Shorts selection finalist, and have fulfilled many industry animation roles at studios including Titmouse, OVFX-Outlook, and Professional Amateur Productions. Their life goal is to tell stories that faithfully depict experiences of the marginalized, offering color and nuance to societal conversations.While not pondering an orb, they can be found collecting smearframes, playing guitar or tabletop games, and writing about themself in the third-person.

Don't Give Up! is Kay's debut title as a solo comic artist. This autobiographical work centers their personal relationship to the craft of creativity itself, along with musings on mental health topics such as neurodiversity, complex trauma, and self-love. The physical book features an immersive foldout including mental health resources, scholarly citations, and an extra look at the making-of.Available for print purchase in Spring 2024.

Saint of Blades is the collaborative effort of Ben Patton (@watthesehandsdo) and Kay as Freakydinks Publishing Co. This gothic-comedy adventure flick is inspired by newspaper comic strips, and follows the titular Saint, a traveling mercenary who encounters a formidable foe at the base of a burning church. Ben laid out each panel with a traditional ink-on-paper approach, and Kay offered the finishing touches as colorist and revisionist. The comic is now available for free digital download after a successful physical print run, minus the included stickers and poster!Released Spring 2021

Storyquest was an experimental collaborative choose-your-own-adventure comic that was published to Instagram stories. The designs and story beats were decided with audience feedback and updated twice daily. Inspired by tabletop roleplaying games, it followed the introduction of the hive-mind character, Scrup, who was at odds with the dozens of voices in their head attempting to control their social interractions and battle maneuvers.Released Summer 2020
