Pause 4 Pups is an ongoing initiative to bring therapy dogs to those who need them in a public and social setting. The cartoony styling captures the energy and likeness of real therapy dogs that have made appearances at previous events-- woof!(includes meme cameos)
Trans Lawrence Coalition is a transgender advocacy and political action group based in Lawrence, Kansas. This flyer was created to advertise their monthly boardgame community event in collaboration with a local retail and hobby space. It features a unique logo and type setting inspired by the organization's existing brand identity.
Kan U Quit is a 6-week limited term tobacco cessation program for students. The cover for this informational panphlet was created using design styling inspired by popular brands of vaping products and integrating colors from the university's branding guidelines.
Safer Sex Express is a delivery service that provides contraceptive tools and educational material to students on college campus. This project takes the acronym 'HERO' (Health Education Resource Office) and turns it into a pun that's both playful and visually references the trope of a superhero coming to lend help to somebody in distress.
SEX in the DARK is an annual day of consent celebration, sex positivity, and safe intimacy practices in a hybrid social-education space at the University of Kansas. The imagery was inspired by costume and stage design used in Beyonce's 2023 Rennaisance Tour cycle. A looping video of a 3D diorama scene was built in Womp and rendered for use in digital and print advertisements.
Kay Holland is a thing-maker and corgi-obsessive from the midwest. At the University of Kansas, she received awards for their thesis animatic Gigi the Gamer Girl, and the virtual-reality music video Feeling Green. As Freakydinks Publishing, Kay co-illustrated and digitized the comic Saint of Blades with Ben Patton. Over the course of her studio career, she has fulfilled many industry animation staff roles at studios including Titmouse, OVFX-Outlook Co, Professional Amateur Productions, and as a freelance artist for Hulu and Adult Swim titles. Her life goal is to advance narratives that contribute to social equity, authentic depictions of marginalized communities, and to make some really cool and captivating things in the process.
Kay is an alumn of the 2021 Warner Bros. Discovery Access Early Career Bootcamp through partnership with the Transgender Film Center. Over the course of five weeks, the cohort participated in a workshop lecture series covering aspects of many careers in the entertainment industry. With roundtable discussions facilitated by junior executives, established talent, and cohort peers, the program aimed to build the knowledge and network bases of its participants.
Don't Give Up! is Kay's debut title as a solo comic artist. This autobiographical work centers their personal relationship to the craft of creativity itself, along with musings on mental health topics such as neurodiversity, complex trauma, and self-love. The physical book features an immersive foldout including mental health resources, scholarly citations, and an extra look at the making-of.WORK IN PROGRESS
Saint of Blades is the collaborative effort of Ben Patton (@watthesehandsdo) and Kay as Freakydinks Publishing Co. This gothic-comedy adventure flick is inspired by newspaper comic strips, and follows the titular Saint, a traveling mercenary who encounters a formidable foe at the base of a burning church. Ben laid out each panel with a traditional ink-on-paper approach, and Kay offered the finishing touches as colorist and revisionist. The comic is now available for free digital download after a successful physical print run, minus the included stickers and poster!Released Spring 2021
Storyquest was an experimental collaborative choose-your-own-adventure comic that was published to Instagram stories. The designs and story beats were decided with audience feedback and updated twice daily. Inspired by tabletop roleplaying games, it followed the introduction of the hive-mind character, Scrup, who was at odds with the dozens of voices in their head attempting to control their social interractions and battle maneuvers.Released Summer 2020
